A visit to a beautiful winery in Penedès region

This page is about wine experiences. So let's start with one: the visit to Vins el Cep.

The winery is located in the Sant Sadurní d'Anoia area, 45 minutes away from Barcelona, either by car or train. I have been lucky enough to be able to visit Vins el Cep with Maite Esteve, the winery's director and winemaker. The Vins el Cep project was born in 1980 from the collaboration of 4 families. However, the history of Vins el Cep has centuries-old roots.

Maite passionately explains the different phases of family history and shows us some of the vineyards that surround the winery. All the vineyards are worked in a natural way, following the biodynamic rules, being Vins el Cep precursors of this type of agriculture.
An important fact that Maite highlights is that Vins el Cep is an integral producer of cava. In other words, it is a company that produces wines and cavas from its own grapes and the entire production process takes place in the same winery.

To the classic varieties of the area, such as Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Parellada and Tempranillo, others such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot or Syrah are added. In the tasting I was able to try 5 of their wines, a selection of sparkling and still wines. Wines that speak of territory, tradition and innovation at the same time.

In general, the sparkling wines tested are very much gastronomic, but with refreshing acidity that are achieved by doing a great job in the vineyard and harvesting at the perfect point of ripeness of the grape. These are wines designed to age well, becoming even more elegant.

On the other side, the two still wines tested feature the xarel· lo variety, in its white and red version (xarel lo vermell). A white wine and an orange, that is, a wine obtained from white grapes but with a long maceration of the skins with the must. In both cases the acidity surprises and again the elegance. Aftertaste is long with pronounced aromas, which make you want another sip.

Thanks to Maite for the time, the explanations and in general for opening the doors of her house to us. At the end of the day what makes wine special are people, their culture, tradition and stories.
